One of the most distressing situations for shelter staff is when a dog finds a home, only to be returned again. Securing a loving home for a dog is already a tough task, but rehoming a dog multiple times is even more challenging and takes a significant toll on the animal. After experiencing the relief of leaving a stressful shelter environment, it’s heart-wrenching for the dog to be brought back when a family decides they no longer want them. Zion, a dog with a warm and affectionate disposition, has faced this painful cycle firsthand. Despite his charming nature, he was returned to the shelter three times, leaving him profoundly disheartened. The shelter staff were baffled but recognized the need to take action to support him. Zion had spent only a year with his last family before they returned him to the Florida shelter, and the reasons for his repeated returns were unclear.
Zion was an ideal companion. He was sociable with everyone and enjoyed playing with other dogs. However, the shelter staff knew that returning to the shelter would significantly affect him, and they understood that he would need time to recover. To assist Zion, the Humane Society of Broward County decided to create a video about his situation in hopes of finding a compassionate new owner.
In the video description, they wrote: “Zion is a beautiful 1-year-old pup who has been returned 3 times because his previous owners didn’t understand him. He was just being himself!” They highlighted that his breed is known for being smart and playful. Zion was very attached to his family and struggled with being alone, which was the primary reason for his returns. When left by himself, he would bark, cry, and occasionally cause damage, leading his previous owners to give him up. The Humane Society of Broward County also stated: “Zion has been let down, and through no fault of his own, he is back at our shelter, hoping for another chance to show what a fantastic dog he can be!”
Zion is a loving and affectionate dog who just wants to be with someone who cares for him. He enjoys exploring new places, playing with his family and other dogs, and especially loves car rides. He would thrive in a home with another dog, as a canine companion might help reduce his anxiety when left alone.
The Humane Society is committed to finding someone who will understand Zion’s needs and appreciate him for the incredible dog he is.
